Explore the settlement of a Jewish homeland with two 20th century propaganda films.
The Land of Promise (Juda Leman, 1935) | 1:00 pm
One of the first sound films produced in [then] Palestine, this early Zionist propaganda film showcases the growing accomplishments of Jewish settlers. Presenting Palestine as a place of opportunity for the Jewish people, the film was made to encourage settlement in the land of Israel.
Seekers of Happiness (Vladimir Korsh & Iosif Shapiro, 1936) | 2:45 pm
This Soviet propaganda film was commissioned by Joseph Stalin to encourage immigration to Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Oblast. Through the melodramatic story of a family moving to Birobidzhan, the film presents a solution to the “Jewish Question” and a guideline for overcoming obstacles in the region.
