About the series: Who owns Anne Frank? This was the provocative question that Cynthia Ozick posed in her classic 1997 New Yorker essay. We will use Ozick’s essay to frame our reading and discuss two important works by Philip Roth and Nathan Englander that grapple with the paradoxes of American Jewish identity and the fraught relationship between art, life and Holocaust memory. We encourage you to read all three pieces ahead of time.
