On Sunday, August 11, 2024, Chase Field in Phoenix will be filled with the sounds of cheers and the sight of smiling faces as the Arizona Diamondbacks face off against the Philadelphia Phillies. This game, however, is more than just a sporting event; it is Jewish Community Day, a celebration of unity, heritage, and the love of baseball, proudly hosted by the Center for Jewish Philanthropy of Greater Phoenix in partnership with numerous local Jewish organizations.

One of the most poignant moments of this special day will be the ceremonial first pitch, thrown by Holocaust survivor Herbert Marx. Herbert’s story is one of remarkable resilience and courage. Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, during Hitler’s rise to power, Herbert witnessed the horrific events of World War II firsthand.

At just six years old, he and his family were forcibly taken to the Gurs concentration camp in France, marking the beginning of a harrowing journey that would eventually see him escape with the help of the French Resistance and find refuge in Switzerland. Despite losing his entire family in the Holocaust, Herbert’s spirit remained unbroken. He rebuilt his life in the United States, serving with distinction in the US Army and later working for the Secret Service.

An ardent soccer enthusiast, Herbert has also dedicated 30 years as an international soccer referee and remains a proud member of both the German Soccer Federation and the United States Soccer Federation. His participation in Jewish Community Day is a powerful reminder of the indomitable human spirit and the importance of remembering our history.

This year’s Jewish Community Day builds on the success of last year’s event, which saw over 700 members of the Jewish community come together. The day promises to be filled with family fun and community spirit. Activities for all ages, special giveaways, and a secure Jewish community area will ensure that everyone can enjoy the festivities. Those who purchase tickets through the special offer will also receive a limited-edition Diamondbacks hat with Hebrew lettering, available while supplies last.

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, the Jewish community youth choir, under the leadership of Cantor Ross Wolman of Phoenix’s Temple Chai, will perform the national anthem. This musical performance will be a beautiful tribute to the unity and heritage being celebrated. Click here to sign up to join other 2nd-9th graders during this special performance.

Tickets for Jewish Community Day are available in various pricing categories, making it accessible for everyone to join in the celebration. Special discounts are offered for groups of 12 or more, and kids 15 and younger can enjoy a discounted $25 ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket.
