Just seven weeks after the end of Passover comes the holiday of Shavuot, which celebrates receiving the Ten Commandments and the Torah at Mt. Sinai. People celebrate the holiday by studying Torah and enjoying cheesy foods like cheesecake and blintzes. These books are great ways to share the joy of the holiday with young kids and teach them about some of the important Ten Commandments like honoring others. Have another family favorite? This fun Jewish folktale tells the story about a husband and wife from Chelm who want to save up enough kopecks (coins) for blintzes to enjoy for Shavuot. They don’t have enough money to purchase the ingredients needed, so they come up with a plan to set aside a a coin each day in an empty trunk with the thought that on Shavuot they will have enough money to make the holiday treat. However, each one counts on the other putting in enough, so will their plan succeed or fail?

A heartfelt, under-dog story about how God chose which mountain to speak from to give the Jewish people laws to follow. In the book, numerous mountains try to boast to God to show off why they should be the chosen mountain. By Allison and Wayne Marks
This is a beautiful story that shares many of the lessons of Shavuot while sharing the relationship between Shoshana and her Grandma Jacobs. Grandma Jacobs and Shoshana love spending time together doing art, so they work together to create papercut roses and Torahs to hang up for Shavuot. But Shoshana gets frustrated when her shapes don’t look like the ones her Grandma made. Grandma Jacobs works with Shoshana to see that her art is beautiful, too, and we get to see Shoshana grow up to recreate the special memory with her own granddaughter many years later.

By Sylvia A. Rouss
After learning about the Ten Commandments in school, Michael starts to think about how fun it would be if school had no rules. His teacher decides to show the class what it would be like without rules, and Michael and the rest of his class soon begin to realize just how important rules are. The colorful illustrations will have children engaged in the important lesson of the necessity of having rules and treating others the way you want to be treated.
