Jewish Philosophy and the Challenges Of Modernity with Professor Hava Tirosh Samuelson

March 27, 2024 Free
Hava Tirosh Samuelson

Offered on Zoom.

In diaspora, Jewish philosophers responded to their surrounding cultures by employing philosophic categories, theories and questions articulated by non-Jewish thinkers. This lecture will offer an overview of modern Jewish philosophy as a distinctive response to the challenges of modernity. We will ask: How did modernity change the Jewish condition? What is distinctive about modern Jewish philosophy? What did modern Jewish philosophers contribute to Western philosophy? Why and how is Jewish philosophy relevant to Jewish life today?

Addressing these questions, this lecture will serve as an introduction to the Jewish philosophy series Professor Hava Tirosh-Samuelson will be teaching in-person, this Fall, on Monday Oct 21, 28, & Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Valley of the Sun JCC. These classes will not be available on Zoom.  Please check back in August to sign up to participate in this follow-up series.
