Every year, on the 27th of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar, the world comes together to honor and remember the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust. This solemn occasion is known as Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. It serves as a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed during one of the darkest chapters in human history.

As we pay tribute to the victims and survivors, we are reminded of the importance of never forgetting and ensuring that such horrors are never repeated.

Phoenix Holocaust Association is dedicated to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and educating future generations about its profound impact. On this year’s Yom HaShoah, we invite you to join us in commemorating this significant day in a few different ways.

Yom HaShoah Commemoration
Please join the Phoenix Holocaust Association (PHA) at its annual community-wide Yom HaShoah observance from 3-5pm on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus.

3:00pm: “Memories Among the Generations”
4:00pm: Community-wide Yom HaShoah Commemoration

Prior to the commemoration ceremony, hear from survivors and descendants about their memories of their life during the war and reflections on their parents and loved ones. The Commemoration will include a procession of survivors, candle lighting in memory of the 6 million Jewish people killed during World War II, presentation of the annual Shofar Zakhor Awards to recognize those who educate the community about the Holocaust, and musical pieces organized by Cantor Dannah Rubinstein of Congregation Or Tzion.

Yom HaShoah Name Reading
On Monday, May 6, 2024, from 8:00am-6:00pm, PHA and the Center for Jewish Philanthropy of Greater Phoenix will be co-hosting Unto Every Person There is a Name: A Reading of Names of the victims of the Shoah outside of the front entrance to the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus. To participate in the reading of names as an individual (each slot is 5-10 minutes), please email LeslieFeldman.pha@gmail.com. If participants are descendants of Shoah victims, we encourage you to bring the names of your family members with you to read aloud.

Yom HaShoah is not only a day of mourning but also a day of resilience and hope. By coming together to remember and honor the victims, we reaffirm our commitment to building a world where such atrocities are never repeated. Join us this Yom HaShoah as we stand united in remembrance and solidarity.

Together, let us ensure that the legacy of the Holocaust continues to inspire us to strive for a future of peace, understanding, and compassion.
