Limmud AZ, an annual gathering that celebrates Jewish learning, culture, and community, is set to host a powerful session titled “Please See Me!” The session promises an insightful panel discussion featuring two members of Gesher Disability Resources, Sophia Landay and Sam House. Gesher Disability Resources, originally known as the Council for Jews with Special Needs, was established in 1985 to address the needs of individuals with disabilities in the Greater Phoenix area, ensuring their full participation in Jewish life. Over the years, Gesher has expanded its services, including residential homes, Shabbat services, social programs, educational support, and a speakers’ bureau comprised of individuals living with disabilities.

The session will feature a candid panel discussion led by Sophia Landay and Sam House. These individuals, living with disabilities, offer a unique perspective on their experiences and aspirations. In a pre-session conversation, they shared their thoughts on what they wish people knew about living with a disability. Unsurprisingly, both expressed a desire for others to recognize them as capable individuals with diverse interests.

The session aims to delve into the unconscious biases that may exist regarding individuals with disabilities. By engaging in open dialogue, attendees will have the opportunity to reflect on their own beliefs and challenge preconceptions. The goal is to empower participants with the tools to create truly inclusive spaces that recognize the inherent dignity and capabilities of every individual.

As participants in the session, Limmud AZ attendees will gain valuable insights into the lives of Sophia and Sam, as well as the broader community represented by Gesher Disability Resources. The experience will serve as a call to action, encouraging everyone to check their biases, broaden their perspectives, and actively contribute to building a more inclusive society.

“Please See Me!” at Limmud AZ promises to be a transformative session, shedding light on the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities and challenging attendees to become advocates for inclusivity. Sophia and Sam’s stories will undoubtedly inspire a collective commitment to recognizing the inherent worth and capabilities of every individual, fostering a world where everyone is seen and celebrated as Betzelem Elohim, created in the image of God.

“Please See Me!” will be a part of the Classic Limmud Sessions at Limmud AZ: A Community Conversation on January 28, 2024.
