As May approaches, the Jewish community worldwide gears up to commemorate two significant events in Israel’s history: Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day) and Yom Haatzmaut (Israel Independence Day). This year, as we mark 76 years of Israel’s existence, the Phoenix Jewish community is coming together to honor the memories of the lives lost and celebrate the remarkable journey of the Israeli nation.

On May 12th, Shevet Shemesh will host a solemn yet poignant gathering to observe Yom Hazikaron at Temple Chai in Phoenix. This event is dedicated to honoring the fallen soldiers and victims of terror who have sacrificed their lives for the safety and security of Israel. The event will provide a space for reflection, remembrance, and solidarity with the families who have lost their loved ones. Together, we will pay tribute to the bravery and resilience of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Following Yom Hazikaron, on May 13th, the Phoenix Jewish community will transition from mourning to celebration with an event titled “Honoring the Fallen, Celebrating the Promise: A Night of Learning Together in Honor of Israel at 76.” Hosted by the Board of Rabbis of Greater Phoenix, this gathering symbolizes the spirit of resilience and hope that defines Israel’s journey. Through learning, discussion, and sharing, participants will explore the legacy of Israel’s founders and the enduring values that have shaped the nation’s identity. It will be a night of inspiration, unity, and renewed commitment to the promise of Israel.
