Our vibrant and diverse Jewish community in Phoenix is about to get a pop or two of color, as the community comes together to embark on a creative journey that aims to reflect the unique tapestry of our shared  Jewish identity. The Center for Jewish Philanthropy (CJP) has launched an innovative initiative — a year-long community art project designed to celebrate individuality and unity through artistic expression.

The main goal of this community art project is to craft a beautiful piece that mirrors the rich diversity of the Jewish community in Phoenix. Participants are invited to contribute to a collective masterpiece by decorating popsicle sticks, which will eventually form a stunning community quilt. The project’s objective is twofold: to encourage artistic expression and to showcase the mosaic of Jewish identities, values, and journeys within the community.

The project was officially launched at the 2023 Jewish Community Night at ZooLights, where the first 100 pieces of the popsicle quilt were decorated by people of all ages. The initiative will continue throughout the year, with ongoing opportunities for participation at various CJP community-wide events.

This artistic endeavor is open to participants of all ages, with the belief that every member of the community has a unique story to share. No specific criteria limit participation, emphasizing inclusivity and the power of collective creation. Participants are encouraged to let their creativity flow freely as they adorn their sticks with personal reflections of their Jewish journey and values using the popsicle sticks as a canvas and colorful markers to decorate with.

While each popsicle stick is an individual expression, the true magic lies in their collective assembly. Together, these sticks will form a beautiful quilt, symbolizing the unity and strength derived from the diversity within the community. Throughout the year, the project will be featured at CJP’s community-wide events, providing ample opportunities for additional contributions. The final reveal is set for December 2024, promising a culmination of a year’s worth of creativity and community spirit.

This project serves as a rallying point for the Jewish community, transcending backgrounds and affiliations. It invites individuals from all walks of life to contribute and be represented in this collective work of art. No artistic skills are required to participate. Contributions can range from words to colors and patterns, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or abilities, can be a part of this vibrant and inclusive community project.
