Michael Arko is a seasoned finance professional with over 20 years of experience running, advising, and investing in companies. He is known for his expertise in interim management, investment banking, pro forma financial modeling, cash flow forecasting, and business plan reviews. Michael has a strong background in equity research and corporate restructuring, having worked with renowned firms such as Alvarez & Marsal and Sanford C. Bernstein.

Michael holds a bachelor’s degree in finance, summa cum laude, from the University of Arizona, and a master’s degree in business administration from Arizona State University. He is also a guest lecturer in the Finance Department at the University of Arizona, sharing his knowledge and insights with aspiring finance professionals. Currently, Michael serves as a partner at Sonora Investment Management managing nearly $2 billion for individuals and institutions. As the chair of the investment policy committee, he engages in equity research, credit analysis, and works closely with clients to achieve their financial goals.

“I previously worked in institutional equity research on wall street and corporate restructuring,” explained Michael when asked about what drew him to his role. “I wanted to apply my institutional background to work with individuals from a portfolio management perspective.”

Beyond his professional endeavors, Michael actively engages with and gives back to his community in Phoenix. He resides in the Paradise Valley area with his wife and daughters, where they are involved with several non-profit entities. He serves on multiple boards for non-profit organizations including Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.  Through his active participation, Michael strives to make a positive impact in the community while also inspiring his own children.

“Our kids see this commitment and it has helped encourage them to participate in Tikkun Olam and Tzedakah,” Michael shared. “Last year our kids founded a junior board of directors at Phoenix Children’s Hospital to support patient care and drug development for kids that have ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. They create the monthly meeting agenda, run the meetings and plan the fundraising and social events. It has turned into an amazing support group for kids.”

Michael has a strong connection to Jewish life and values. Having grown up in a Conservative Jewish household, he now identifies as a member of two Reform synagogues. He and his family engage in various Jewish activities, including his kids who attend religious school and Camp Daisy and Harry Stein each summer. Shabbat holds a special place in their home, and they celebrate it as often as possible. Michael previously served on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix and was a volunteer religious school teacher.

Outside of his professional and community commitments, Michael cherishes spending time with his family. He is an avid sports fan and enjoys playing golf, skiing, and hiking. Exploring new destinations, savoring good food, and appreciating fine wine are among his favorite pastimes. Michael takes immense pride in watching his daughters’ achievements, be it their performances in musical theater or on the field playing club soccer.

Michael’s passion for finance stems from his love for analytical work, equity research, credit analysis, and company valuation. However, his true satisfaction lies in working with families and making a positive impact on their lives. By applying his institutional background to portfolio management, he assists individuals in achieving their financial goals.

When it comes to portfolio management, Michael emphasizes the importance of focusing on quality securities and adopting a long-term perspective that aligns with one’s goals, needs, and suitability. By maintaining a strategic outlook and considering the broader picture, individuals and businesses can make informed decisions and build a strong financial foundation.

Michael’s multifaceted expertise in finance, his commitment to his community, and his devotion to Jewish values make him an invaluable asset to both the financial industry and the Phoenix community.
